An austere landscape. William Dafoe. A hopeless longing. The mindnumbing malaise of the work place. A little death in the afternoon. Marina Abramovic. So goes the Cliff Notes’ version of Antony and the Johnsons‘ new video for “Cut the World.”
To herald the release of their new live album, Cut the World (out now on Secretly Canadian), Antony Hegarty and Co. have released a video for the title track. The song, one of several recorded over two nights in Copenhagen last year, finds that signature voice backed by the 60-piece Danish National Chamber Orchestra. Though unreleased until now, the piece was originally written as part of the opera, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, a theatrical presentation of the many lives of the performance artist extraordinaire. This video is astonishing and the song’s melody is just sparse enough for the listener’s own forlorn memories to invade and take root.
