Sound City Studios Documentary

Dave Grohl believes in rock and roll—its lore, its fractured splendor, all its ghosts and all its conquering heroes. He is a member of the church of the craft of rock and roll.  And with his upcoming documentary, Sound City Studios, he’s taking all of us to Sunday service with him.

The film’s aim: to tell the story of the legendary Van Nuys, California cathedral to the true majesty of analog recording, Sound City Studios.  The studio complex and its hand-wired Neve 8028 recording console bore witness to some of the most significant recorded moments in music. It was used to mix Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Damn the Torpedoes, Rage Against the Machine’s mind-blowing self-titled debut and of course, the nothing-again-will-ever be-the-same masterpiece, Nirvana’s Nevermind.  The likes of Johnny Cash, Nine Inch Nails, Cheap Trick, Pat Benatar, Guns N’ Roses and Metallica have all shared time within the studio’s walls.

Once the studio officially closed in May of 2011, Grohl seized the opportunity to purchase the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, the 8028, and thus the creative spark for the love-letter of documentary was born. Through the words of those musicians and producers who had the luxury of recording at Sound City, Grohl weaves a film that reveals the secrets of but a privileged few.  The rest of us are finally privy to hear true craftsmen and women talk rock and roll shop.

“[I]t was the birthplace of legend. It was witness to history. It was home to a special few, intent on preserving an ideal. An analog church, a time capsule. The last bastion of a craft defied by technology. It was rock and roll hallowed ground. And it was our best-kept secret. Now I want to tell its story.”

The Foo Fighters’ frontman will not only direct but also don the cap of producer for the feature. Roswell Films, a division of his Roswell Records label, are set to distribute the film. Undoubtedly, the planned accompanying soundtrack will also be stellar with preliminary word of a featured musical collaboration with former bandmate, Krist Noveselic with Butch Vig at the production helm.

We await word on an official release date for Sound City Studios. Imbibe on these snippets and teasers in the interim.
